My Personal Coaching Philosophy

I believe that the football experience is an educational experience. The technical and physical development is an essential area in the growth and success of a football player, but equally important are the areas of psychological, mental, social, emotional and spiritual player development. Individual growth in these six areas will establish a player with a total understanding towards the game of football as well as an education in future living skills.

As a coach I take on various roles, but most importantly that of a teacher. When teaching the game of football, I focus on developing the fundamentals of the game. Players need to become technically efficient in the skills of passing, receiving, shooting, heading and dribbling. Without these basic skills intact, the game will not reveal itself to the players. Technical skills are the foundation of the player. As a coach, I want to try to develop a player's individual skill so that they will have the opportunity to further advance their careers. The fundamental skills of soccer need to be applied to the game. The technical ability of the player needs to be challenged within the game environment. Training sessions must be structured so that players are performing under realistic situations. Under these circumstances, players are forced to utilise the skills trained, but are also developing their tactical awareness. The next phase of the player's development focuses on "decision making".

Under pressure, players need to make sound decisions. Within the game, there are numerous scenarios that can occur, therefore training session need to replicate the game. Attacking principles, such as penetration, support, mobility, width/depth and scoring, as well as the defensive principles like chasing, delaying, pressure, cover, balance, compactness and winning the ball need to be addressed. To ensure the tactical development of the players, the topic should progressively be taught from individual, group, team, and tactical functional training. Progressively teaching tactics will allow for tactical concepts to appear, such as transition, vision, communication and speed of play. I teach my players a healthy approach to developing physiologically through my understanding of good nutrition and strength training. Psychologically I think it is important to expose any player to a gentlemanly mature attitude towards winning. I expect my players to learn from their losses and stand tall in times of defeat. Furthermore, I teach my players to be mentally prepared for every football game. This demands of them an understanding of positions and game plans, and also maintaining a high level of concentration. I also encourage my players to be emotionally prepared for every game. I feel my role as a motivator is extremely important. During both games and practices, I ask my players only to work at the best of their abilities, and in return, I assist in creating a healthy balance between that of hard work and enjoyment, which is also essential to a group's success. Socially I expect my players to interact and establish good relationships with individuals within the football environment as well as within the community. I teach and encourage my players to attain a positive attitude in their own abilities, to gain respect and trust towards other team members, and have pride in representing their team. They are taught to act as gentlemen at all times.

In pursuit to develop all these attributes, I feel playing football can only enhance the players spiritually and assist in aiding them to live a more mature and educated life. My coaching will be a success if my players can reflect on their football experience with positive and rewarding memories.
